Balance

Held by magnets, undone by a breath

Four magnetically balanced pairs

People try to find and maintain balance in their lives, but it seems to be constantly compromised and renegotiated. It is this fragility of balance, and its vulnerability to external stimuli, that I wanted to convey through this sculpture.

Nature is very good at keeping balance. If the atmosphere were taken away, the floating elements of this sculpture would stay in place forever. To change something, an external force has to be applied, and there is a huge variety of them that can trigger a chain of events and disturb an existing balance.

The sculpture consists of four pairs of metallic elements that are attracted by magnets. Each pair has to be positioned with great precision to balance, and the piece gradually reveals itself as each element is added. If no external force is applied, such as a strong stream of air or a human touch, the elements will keep balancing.
