This project is a collaboration with my very good friend and artist Alessandro Iacopelli. Alessandro’s sculptures are inspired from his passion of insects. My role was to give them life by putting sensors. We decided to make a sculpture that would balance in one axis and rotate freely around. The goal was that when someone approaches, the sculpture would sense him and while he moved around the sculpture would follow. The idea was to use two ultrasonic sensors to detect whether the viewer went right or left and two PC fans to rotate the sculpture.
One problem we faced was how to pass electricity to the circuit since the sculpture would be constantly rotating. Cables would twist around and at some point block. Electricity had to go through without cables. A special base was made for the sculpture that passed the positive lead through contact and the negative through a bearing. (See image below)
